Correction/lifting of the lower eye lid via laser

  1. Typically drooping/sagging skin of the eye lid is removed surgically (blepharoplasty). It should be considered that a lift of the lower eye lid is technically more difficult to perform than that of the upper eye lid, as it is imanently important to avoid over-correction to prevent epiphora (leaking of tears).
  2. Some physicans perform the cut via a laserbeam instead of using a scalpell, claiming to see better treatment results and quicker healing. As this is still controversial in currently available studies, many authors regard both the conservative surgical approach and the laser technique as equally effective. Another option for performing the cut is via radiowave-surgery.
  3. With only minimal sagging of the lid, the so-called laser-skin resurfacing can be applied. Here, the upper skin is removed via pulsed CO2- oder Erbium:YAG-laser while the heat induces shrinking and lifting of the underlying tissues. One could describe this mode of action as a controlled burn of the skin.
  4. Alternatively, minimal sagging or fine wrinkles of the skin can be treated with lasers that penetrate the upper layer of the skin without altering it and with their thermic effect on the corium (deeper skin) inducing shrinkage and thereby smoothing of the skin. A multitude of lasers have been developed to achieve this effect, however, it is currently under investigation which system will yield the best results.
  5. To find out which method is best for you, you should consult with an expert you trust. Eye lid corrections are carried out by dermatologic laser experts but also by ophthalmologists and plastic surgeons. For further information, please turn to our general information section.
